Version 8.40
for the
IBM PC, XT, AT, PCjr, PS/2 (and compatibles)
with
Hercules Monochrome Graphics Adapter
or
Color Graphics Adapter (CGA)
or
Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA)
or
Multi-Color Graphics Array (MCGA)
or
Video Graphics Array (VGA)
Summary of Changes in CompuShow Version 8.40:
============================================
- Greatly extended mouse support! You can do almost everything without ever
touching the keyboard; log to a different drive, select a display mode, set
directory and program options, and more.
- Dithering of all 2, 4, and 16 color display modes. Best ever display
quality on Hercules, CGA, and EGA adapters!
- "Full time rescaling" automatically displays all graphics to fit or fill
the screen.
- New pop-up boxes, including an option box to turn on/off sounds, auto-
rescaling, and dithering.
- Support of XMS (Extended) memory as well as EMS (Expanded) memory.
- TIFF class B, G, P, R, and F graphics with PackBits, LZW, CCITT group 3 & 4
and no compression.
- GEM/Ventura IMG graphics.
- "OS/2 style" BMP graphics.
- [F1] displays file information while viewing the graphic.
- GREATLY improved printing quality on all printers with the enhanced
(registered) program! (The people who've been testing the new version have
described the new print quality as "terrific", "spectacular", "incredible"
and "really super"!)
Program Description and Features: Overview
==========================================
* CompuShow begins by retrieving, sorting, and displaying a directory of your
disk files.
* The sorted directory is displayed with up to 120 files per screen.
Additional directory screens may be accessed with PgDn/PgUp. A directory
mask may be specified (such as "*.GIF"), and the directory display may be
switched between compressed (up to 120 files/screen) and wide format
(maximum 40 files/screen, showing file name, size, date, and time).
* The directory may be sorted ascending or descending by file name,
extension, size, date, or "unsorted" (in DOS sequence).
* You may change to a different disk drive and/or sub-directory by pressing
[F2].
* A single keystroke switches to drive A:, drive B:, the "original",
"program", or "config" (enhanced program) disk drive and subdirectory.
* Graphics files are selected for display by either:
- Typing the name of the file,
or
- "Pointing" to the file by moving a highlight bar around the
file directory with the cursor keys or mouse.
* The selected file is analyzed and a "graphics information box" pops up in
the middle of the screen.
* This pop up box includes information about the graphics file (image size,
colors, etc.) and available display options.
* Graphics images are displayed with a single keystroke from the graphics
information box. You may display a graphic in any mode supported by your
graphics adapter (for example, a VGA adapter supports CGA, EGA, and MCGA
displays), or pressing the spacebar tells the program to automatically
select the "best display mode", based on the size and number of colors in
the image.
* After you've viewed the image, you return to this information box and may
immediately re-display the image (in the same mode or a different mode)
with a single keystroke.
* When you're finished with a graphics file, a single keystroke returns you
to the main (sorted directory) screen, where you may select another
graphics file to display.
* The program displays CompuServe GIF and RLE, MacPaint, PC Paintbrush, PC
Paint, Dr. Halo, RIX Ega Paint and ColoRix, Targa 16/24/32, uncompressed
and RLE, mapped and RGB images, Deluxe Paint II and Deluxe Paint II
Enhanced, Windows BMP, TIFF, and Gem/Ventura IMG graphics.

* You may interrupt (abort) any graphics display with ESCape or Ctrl-C.
* Images larger than the physical screen may be "panned", using the cursor
arrow keys.
* Any monochrome display may be negated (reversing black and white) with a
single keystroke.
* The "brightness" of any monochrome image may be adjusted.
* On an EGA display:
- 320x200 images can be "Zoomed" to 640x400 for an improved full screen
display using a FAST color dithering technique.
- Colors may be adjusted to yield a more natural or pleasing image. The
adjusted color palette may be saved to disk, and will be used any time
the graphic is displayed. You may also instantly "toggle" between the
original colors and your adjusted color palette.
* On an MCGA/VGA display:
- A single keystroke switches between color and "gray-scale" displays.
- Colors may be adjusted, and the new color palette saved to disk.

Standard Program Version 8.40a
==============================================================================
The latest standard version of CompuShow is available in the CompuServe
Graphics Support Forum [Go PICS] in LIBrary 3, as CSHOWA.EXE, which is a
"self-extracting" archive.
Download the file as CSHOWA.EXE and execute "CSHOWA" to extract the program,
user's guide and all other files. (Since this is a SELF-EXTRACTING archive,
you DON'T NEED a separate "de-archive" program.)
==============================================================================
Enhanced Program Version 8.40b
==============================================================================
By becoming a registered CompuShow user (for $25), you will receive a copy of
the enhanced program (Version 8.40b), which includes all features of the
standard program plus:
* The System Configuration program allows you to install screen colors, and
to specify a number of "program start-up options", including a disk drive
and sub-directory to be selected automatically.
****************************
* P R I N T I N G *
****************************
* All graphics images may be printed on a wide variety of printers.
* Graphics printer drivers are included for 8 and 24 pin, monochrome and
color dot matrix printers and the HP Laser Jet.
* The "new" print routines (starting with version 8.40) have been described
as "terrific", "spectacular", "incredible" and "really super"!
**********************************
* S L I D E S H O W *
**********************************
* The CompuShow "Slide Show" program lets you design your own shows to run
one time, repeat automatically, or run in "operator mode" (waiting for a
key press between images.)
* An automatic slide show "script generator".
